September’s UK trade data has been released by the Office for National Statistics. UK goods exports fell in September by 4.7 per cent. The drop in exports to the EU was higher than to the rest of the world - 5.1 per cent compared with 4.2 per cent. Overall goods imports to the UK fell by five per cent% with EU imports down by 7.3 per cent and non-EU imports down by three per cent. Read the comments from the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) on a weakening UK trade position here.

Last week, the BCC was successful in achieving a further delay from UK Ministers in the phasing out of CE-marked goods on the GB market. CE-marked goods will continue to be permitted on the GB market until the end of 2024, with easements on labelling of UKCA marked products extended until the end of 2027. Read the BCC comments here, where they call for a further period of clarity until after 2026, and intensified discussions between government and business on long-term solutions on markings and testing of goods.

The BCC was involved with discussions with HM Revenue and Customs last week on the rollout of the Single Trade Window first release by the end of 2023. Officials told them that safety and security certificates and import documentation will be included in the initial rollout. They will be in further contact on arrangements for consultation on the operation and design of the new interfaces.

Last week, UK Ministers unveiled a new scheme for businesses to donate energy equipment to Ukraine to help replace the 40 per cent of infrastructure destroyed in the war since February. The BCC hope to meet with officials shortly to discuss further plans for reconstruction in Ukraine and how business can help.
